After a bachelor’s or undergraduate degree the academically inclined student’s next step will be a program of study at a graduate school. It is important to know and understand what the graduate school wants so you can adjust your work skills and experiences to fit the ideal student profile they are looking for.

To be admitted to a graduate school it will be required to submit letters of recommendation, transcript, standardized test scores such as GRE, personal statements, and admission essay. Some schools will in addition to that require a personal interview before making the final decision. The student needs to carefully fill the application forms, as an incomplete form will be rejected.

The academic progress is recorded on the transcript and it is normally not a part of the students graduate school application. The transcript will be received by the registrar office at the graduate school and only included in the application if the student want it and have filled in required forms specifying the reasons. The process should be started early in order to avoid delays and unforeseen problems.

Many schools will ask for Graduate Record Exams (GRE). Business schools, medical schools and law schools will ask for GMAT, MSAT and LSAT scores from the student. The reason is to evaluate the student’s qualifications for the different levels of the graduate studies. Most schools have a cut off score to the GRE score. If you are below the required GRE score you will not be accepted into the graduate school.

In the process of reviewing the applications, the graduate schools are looking for qualifications that will ensure they accept promising students. They will try and find the students who are most eager to learn and show motivation and desire for success. Students should openly express their willingness to supervision and guidance. This should be backed up by the student’s personal statement and the essay.
